HCG Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Diet and Infertility: How it Works

HCG is a hormone produced during pregnancy and has recently gained attention in a diet fad. It is not approved for dieting by the FDA, but it can be used for fertility treatments. Dr. Shawn Breen brings her expertise on the subject to Atlantic Reproductive.

After working in research for several years, Dr. Shawn Breen sought a clinical laboratory experience with the kind of pedigree that came with the founders of Atlantic Reproductive Medicine. However, what ultimately drew her to Raleigh was the Atlantic Reproductive environment: “I chose Atlantic because of the good warm feeling I instantly felt when I walked into the practice. It’s a very loving environment where everyone truly cares and is invested in their patients’ journeys in building a family.”

Dr. Breen is known for her work in gonadotropin treatment development and understanding how the gonadotropin receptor functions to prevent infertility. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) has recently gained notoriety as part of a weight loss diet, although it is not approved by the FDA for that use. Gonadotropin development is approved for fertility treatments, which is one reason why Dr. Breen’s previous experience is such a valuable addition to the Atlantic Reproductive staff.

She has a knack for problem solving and teaching. While at the University of Iowa, she trained Ob/Gyn Fellows in laboratory techniques. She is the recipient of the Ruth L. Kirchstein National Research Service Award from the NICHD, a recipient of the Teaching Assistant Excellence award from the University of Illinois, as well as being a member of both the National Scholar’s Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Delta also while at the University of Illinois.

In her leisure time, Dr. Breen enjoys being with friends and family. You will also find her at the barn with her horse, playing in the park with her dogs or most recently since coming to the warmer climate of the South, running and swimming. When asked about her move to North Carolina, she likened it to “this Must Be the Place” by the Talking Heads as the new soundtrack to her life! We agree and are so excited to have her in the Atlantic family.
