Controlled Ovarian Stimulation

Controlled Ovarian Stimulation

Unfortunately, for many women and couples, pregnancy isn’t easily achieved through tracking an ovulation calendar and having timed intercourse. Often the pathway to pregnancy can involve monitoring signs of ovulation, stops, starts, and certainly frustrating roadblocks that, with a trusted, compassionate doctor, you can work to overcome.

Atlantic Reproductive Medicine, a fertility clinic in Raleigh, NC, specializes in building families together in conjunction with their valued patients. As a part of our fertility treatments, our doctors are capable of administering safe, controlled ovarian stimulation medication in the hopes of jump-starting the development of follicles and eggs, increasing your chances of becoming pregnant.

What is Controlled Ovarian Stimulation & What Is Involved?

Controlled Ovarian Stimulation, or hyperstimulation, is, by definition, a mix of medications designed to stimulate follicle development, resulting in greater egg production in women. It’s frequently used as the first step of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Our Raleigh, NC, fertility doctors hope to obtain as many healthy eggs as possible before introducing sperm, as some eggs don’t survive the transfer process.

In order to stimulate follicles, hormones are injected over a period of around ten days. During that time, our staff will utilize ultrasound to monitor and track the progression of the follicles. Growth is indicated using the antral follicle count, or AFC, which is a scale that ranges from 1 – 30. Ideally, we’d like to see an AFC somewhere in the neighborhood between 15 and 30 — that means your potential for pregnancy is at its highest. Scores from 8 – 14 mean a slight reduction in pregnancy rate from the ideal range.

Artificial insemination, also known as intrauterine insemination (IUI), is a technique that involves placing sperm inside the woman’s uterus with a catheter to achieve fertilization. Unlike IVF, artificial insemination does not require collecting eggs from the ovaries or fertilization outside the body.
