What is Ovulation Induction?

Ovulation induction is the use of fertility medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce and release an egg. This treatment is especially helpful for patients with infrequent or absent ovulation, such as those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other hormonal imbalances.

In women who ovulate regularly, these same medications can be used to encourage the development of more than one egg — a process called superovulation. This approach may improve the chances of pregnancy in certain situations, especially when combined with intrauterine insemination (IUI).

How It Works

Ovulation induction usually starts early in your cycle and typically involves taking oral medications (like letrozole or Clomid). Less frequently, injectable medications (gonadotropins) may be required to induce ovulation.

Throughout the process, we monitor follicular growth with ultrasound and bloodwork, adjusting medications as needed. Once the follicles have reached the appropriate size, a trigger shot is used to prompt ovulation, followed by timed intercourse or IUI, depending on your treatment plan.
