Atlantic Fertility is proud to partner with the Filotimo Foundation to ensure adults living with cystic fibrosis (CF) have access to expert fertility care, compassionate support, and financial resources to build the families they dream of.

What Is Cystic Fibrosis (CF)?

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that affects the lungs, digestive system, and other organs. Thanks to medical advancements, people with CF are living longer, healthier lives—reaching milestones previous generations could only imagine, including marriage, parenthood, and family building.

How Does CF Impact Fertility?

While CF does not affect everyone’s fertility in the same way, many people with the condition face unique reproductive challenges:

  • Men with CF: The vast majority experience congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD), a condition that prevents sperm from traveling out of the body. Though natural conception is difficult, sperm can typically still be retrieved surgically and used for IVF.

  • Women with CF: Some may experience thicker cervical mucus, irregular cycles, or additional health considerations that can make conception more difficult—but pregnancy is often very possible with the right care.

  • Fertility Preservation Before Lung Transplant: For both men and women with CF, fertility preservation can be an important option prior to lung transplant.

  • Men may choose sperm extraction and freezing.

  • Women may pursue egg retrieval and freezing. Preserving reproductive cells before transplant can significantly increase the chances of conceiving afterward, giving individuals more flexibility and family-building options as their health improves.

Atlantic Fertility understands these CF-specific challenges and designs treatment plans that support both your fertility goals and your overall health.
