Matt Coward, MD, FACS
Urologic Microsurgeon Specialized in the Treatment of Male Fertility
Dr. Matt Coward is a board-certified urologic microsurgeon specializing in the evaluation and treatment of male infertility. A North Carolina native, he is nationally recognized for his expertise in advanced microsurgical male fertility procedures and is the only reproductive urologist in the region offering comprehensive male fertility care within a fully integrated fertility practice.
Dr. Coward earned his MD with Distinction from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also completed his urology residency. He completed fellowship training in Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine under Dr. Larry Lipshultz. From 2013 to 2022, he served as Director of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at UNC, where he built a nationally recognized academic and fellowship training program and trained reproductive urologists now practicing across the country.
A leader in the field, Dr. Coward is a co-author of the American Urological Association’s 2026 Guideline on Vasectomy and Fertility Restoration after Vasectomy. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters and lectures nationally and internationally. He previously served as President of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology (SMRU) and, during his tenure as Vice President and President, served on the Board of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). He remains on the Board of SMRU as Past President and currently serves as Secretary of the Society for the Study of Male Reproduction (SSMR), an affiliated society of the American Urological Association (AUA). Through these roles, Dr. Coward remains actively engaged in national leadership within both the urology and reproductive medicine communities. He continues to teach and has served as course faculty for the SMRU Fellows Symposium in Park City in 2024 and 2025, as well as faculty for the 2026 Urology Residents’ Annual Review Course for the written urology board examination.
At Atlantic Fertility, Dr. Coward serves as Vice President and Chief of Male Reproductive Medicine and Surgery, providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for men with fertility concerns. Patients travel from across the region and beyond to seek his expertise, while local patients value his thoughtful, straightforward approach and collaborative care within Atlantic Fertility’s fully integrated model, offering complete fertility care for both women and men under one roof.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Coward is active in his community and previously served as President of the Board of Directors for the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill and on the Board of Directors for the Ronald McDonald House of the Triangle. He enjoys running, cheering on the Tar Heels, attending concerts, and spending time with his wife and children while supporting their many activities.
