Certain fertility treatments and in-office anesthesia procedures can have limitations related to age and body mass index. General guidelines are outlined below, however, each person is unique, so we welcome the opportunity to answer your specific questions and evaluate your unique profile. BMI (body mass index):

Outpatient Anesthesia

Surgical procedures performed at Atlantic Reproductive Medicine are in an office-based setting, and include:

• IVF (in vitro fertilization) egg retrieval

• Hysteroscopy

• D&C (dilation and curettage)

• Vasectomy reversal and certain sperm retrieval procedures (ex: microTESE)

The use of in-office anesthesia has several capabilities that differ from in-patient (hospital-based) anesthesia. Certain medical factors are required for anesthesia in an office-based setting.

Requirements for anesthesia include:

• BMI less than 40

• No pre-existing significant heart and lung conditions

• No airway difficulties or history of prior anesthesia complications

Fertility Treatment Pathways

Fertility treatments, ultrasounds, and monitoring are available at a BMI less than 50.

Treatments include:

• Ovulation induction with intercourse

• Ovulation induction with IUI (intrauterine insemination)

• Frozen embryo transfer

Note:  IVF egg retrieval treatment uses in-office anesthesia and is available at BMI less than 40.

Fertility Diagnostic Testing

A fertility consultation and diagnostic testing for ovarian reserve, hormones, hysterosalpingogram (HSG), genetic testing, and semen analysis can be performed regardless of BMI or other medical diagnoses.

Patients with BMI of 40 or Above

Age and Available Treatment Options

Fertility Treatment Pathways with Own Eggs

For patients using their own eggs, treatments are available through age 45.

Treatment examples include:

• Ovulation induction with intercourse

• Ovulation induction with IUI (intrauterine insemination)

• IVF (in vitro fertilization)

Fertility Treatment Pathways with Donor Eggs or Donor Embryos

For patients using donor eggs or donor embryos, treatments are available through age 50.

Example treatments include:

• Donor egg recipiency

• Donor embryo recipiency

• Gestational carrier (surrogacy)
